I’ve never worked with Susan Wojcicki directly on any project, but one time I was on the same bus with her.
This was during Google’s MTV (Mountain View office) ski trip a long time ago. She was on the same bus, and as the trip went on, she came to the back of the bus to have conversations with new APMs. I was sitting in the middle of the bus but could overhear some of the conversations she had with the APMs. She shared a lot of sage advice, not in a “I’m the adult in the room” way, but in a very friendly way – just like a big sister next door.
I can now see a lot of Xooglers genuinely saddened by her early death and missing her dearly. Someone said one clear way of measuring one’s impact is by seeing how much they are missed upon their death. Clearly, she impacted a lot of people around her, not just through her great work but also by being a good, kind person. Rest in peace.
