Eventbrite is getting acquired by Bending Spoons for $500M.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw the news? Luma and Partiful.
My immediate assumption was that Eventbrite may have been out-innovated by these newer players, which must have led to this acquisition.
I have no idea if that’s actually true or not; this is purely speculation on my part.
But if that’s indeed the case, here are two quick takeaways:
– There’s still plenty of room to disrupt old, Gen X-era internet brands – products that are still big but have been stallng or even in decline (see Eventbrite’s stock chart below)
– Founders don’t always need to come up wild new ideas. Taking a product people already use and delivering a 10x experience with better modern UI/UX could be a very valid approach
