DMV sucks.
It’s easy to blame this on the people who work there (“They’re so slow and lazy!”) – But did DMV intentionally hire lazy people? No.
Question is, what incentives do the DMV employees have to process lines more quickly? Probably very little.
If your team isn’t fast and efficient, before rushing to judge the team’s capabilities, see if there’s an incentive structure set up and aligned with desired behaviors.
Of course, not every action requires an incentive, and it’s important to hire individuals who are intrinsically motivated, not extrinsically motivated.
However, we’re all humans and we all appreciate some level of incentives. It’s also important to remember that incentives don’t have to be large or monetary. Emotional incentives, such as a culture of recognition and appreciation, can be just as effective in motivating teams.
PS. DMV still sucks..
