What if your job were to start the biggest wildfire possible? (Probably not the best analogy given the wildfires in LA earlier this year, but please bear with me..)
Probably the most common-sense move would be to find the driest forest – a place where one tiny ember could spark a massive fire (= market).
You probably wouldn’t spend too much time finding the strongest torch or most high-tech fire starter (= product). Those tools would help, but if the ground is damp and the leaves are wet, these won’t help that much. Likewise you won’t stock up for gas for the torch (= funding) as your first move.
Some things in startups (and in life) start making more sense if you think of success as starting a wildfire.
